Portrait of a Lady

Meet Emmeline Clark, who was a young schoolteacher on the East coast. At 19, she was happily engaged to be married to her childhood sweetheart. As a wedding gift to him, she had this portrait painted of her, which was hung in the house they were to share. Unfortunately, just weeks before their wedding, her fiancé died after falling off his horse while out hunting with friends, leaving poor Emmeline sad and despondent. She didn't know how she would live without him. But then, one cold winter's day, while Emmeline was teaching a lesson in her hometown's one-room schoolhouse, a coal escaped the stove and soon set the schoolhouse ablaze. Everyone made it out, save for one: Emmeline herself. She had gone back inside to rescue a trapped student, but was unable to make it out herself before the roof collapsed. When news spread of her death, the whole town grieved, for she had been beloved by everyone who knew her, and they wondered what her life would have been like had it not ended so soon and so tragically. Now, every year on the anniversary of her death, her spirit appears and roams the halls of her childhood home, searching for her long-lost love. Her portrait would appear to mysteriously burst into flames, burn for a few minutes, and then abate, leaving the portrait completely intact. Only her family and closest friends know why.
